Toronto Terrorism Trial: Wiretap Evidence Presented

March 27th, 2008No Comments

The terrorism trial that just began in Toronto is making headlines around the globe, and if recently released court documents are anything to go by, this trial is going to give Canadians a better understanding of just how serious home-grown terrorism in Canada really is.

The wiretap evidence that the Crown has, is in my opinion, very convincing. I have no doubt in my mind that the youth that is before the courts now, and his 14 other co-conspirators, were out to make a name for themselves as jihadists and were prepared to launch an attack on Canadians on a larger scale than the terrorist attacks in London on July 7, 2005.  In that attack 56 people died, but PM Tony Blair wasn’t beheaded and the British Parliament wasn’t attacked.

The 15 terrorism suspects apparently had high expectations for their planned terrorist attack and the wiretaps prove it.  There were conversations about attacking politicians on Parliament Hill, there was talk of beheading PM Stephen Harper, and there was talk of planting a bomb on Front St.  The bomb on Front St., whether it was placed there or strapped to a suicide bomber walking down the street, would have killed a lot of people.  Beheading a head of state would have gotten the Canadian terror cell a lot of  international attention, and notoriety, but I doubt it would have helped their cause.

Beheading PM Harper was a stupid idea, and now that the wiretaps have revealed the extent to which the “wannabe terrorists” were prepared to go to,  I have no doubt in my mind that all 15 terror suspects are guilty of the crimes they are accused of and that they were stupid. The fact that they were caught shows just how stupid the 15 wannabe jihadists were and are.

Try them, convict them and then sentence them to jail. Lock them up for as long as Canada can, and then kick them out of the country, Canadian citizen or not.

It’s too bad that the death penalty isn’t on the table for people who plot to to murder Canada’s head of state, otherwise all 15 of these suspects could be facing the firing squad, a squad I wouldn’t mind being a member of.
