I happened to notice during the past couple of days that the mainstream media isn’t really saying much about the fact that a cold-blooded killer, a mentally deranged one no less, is allowed to walk the streets of Canada unsupervised for up to 10 days at time.
Somewhere right now this cold-blooded killer could very well picking out his next victim thanks to what one paralegal in Calgary considers to be a rotten apple, the judge that says Stephan Gaetan Lee cannot be held criminal responsibility for stabbing Steven Tavares 28 times.
Why isn’t the media all over this story more, what is it they’re afraid of, or is it simply a matter that this story doesn’t matter to them? Maybe it’s just me, but it would appear that some journalists and newspaper editors in Calgary might be thinking that this story just isn’t worthy. It’s either that or they are afraid of taking on the justice system, afraid of the consequences for them more than they are about the possibility that there very well could be another Stephan Lee murder victim one day. Hard to say why they are so reluctant to delve into the facts surrounding Justice Peter Lee’s decision not to hold Lee criminally responsible for his murderous actions, you know do a little investigative journalism of their own, but they have their reasons and I for one would love to hear those reasons. What are they afraid of I wonder?
Before I forget, I have a question for the coroner who examined Tavares’s body, how many of those stab wounds were fatal, one, two, three, four, more than four, more than half, or can I just pick a number? The reason I want to know is because I would like to know how many stab wounds an assailant has to inflict before it is determined that he or she cannot be held criminally responsible for their actions. I’m sure there are a lot of potential murderers who would also like to know that.
Anyway…
According to one website I visited to find out more about the kind of judge Justice Peter Martin is, I learned that he plays by his own “courtroom rules” and that he is more than willing to skew the facts pertaining to cases he hears, if not totally disregard them, especially when it comes to saving his own ass. Hmm, the judge sounds like a real piece of work. But why believe me, just visit the website yourself and make up your own mind about the kind of judge he is, though I have to warn you that it doesn’t appear that the information about Justice Martin has been updated lately.
The webmaster of that site, who claims to have been a paralegal for more than 12 years in Alberta, seems to be more than a little familiar with the judge and isn’t afraid to publish his thoughts about the judge despite knowing the heat it might bring down upon him, which would be a considerable amount if what he has published so far is anything to go by.
Here’s a little taste on what appears on that www.rottenapples.info in regards to Justice Peter Martin and his actions on the bench:
-he intentionally prevented subpoenaed police officers from testifying.
-he disregarded evidence of perjury against several lawyers who testified under oath.
-he disregarded evidence of fabricated documents being entered into evidence.
-to prevent the above information from coming out, he stopped the hearing one third of the way through, without good cause or reason. He then rendered a decision that was designed to stop any further inquiry, and to keep what he had done from coming out.
Now I ask you, if the above is true about Justice Peter Martin, is there anybody who would like to come into Crooked in Canada and explain to me why this guy should be allowed to stay on the bench?
Really, think about it for a minute, is he the type of Judge Canadians, never mind Albertans want delivering justice for them?
I bet most Crooked in Canada readers would agree with me that this particular judge sounds a little more than dirty to be a judge, perhaps even corrupt if the allegations published about him at www.rottenapples.info turns out to be true.
By the way, I have no reason to believe that the allegations the webmaster has published on his site are not true. If the allegations weren’t true does anybody think the publisher of that information would risk a defamation suit, I certainly don’t?
I only had to peruse the entire website to figure that out for myself. There is quite a plethora of information on that website about some rather shonky actions by a whole lot of people in law enforcement, and of course officers of the court by the way. I invite Crooked in Canada readers to visit the site and see for themselves.
That said; I have to wonder if Justice Peter Martin disregarded evidence in Stephan Lee’s case, and if he did, whether that evidence would indicate that Lee could have and should have been found criminally responsible for his murderous actions three years ago.
Justice Peter Martin out of the way for the time being, what about the two key witnesses that let Lee into Tavares’s room at the Delta Resort, Mark Harwood the security guard, and Jeremy Walls the night auditor. Aren’t those two guys a piece of work, and aren’t they lucky they aren’t being held accountable for their actions and the responsibility they should bare for letting Lee into a sleeping Tavares’s room in the first place. At least I don’t think they are being held accountable, though they should have been at least fired from their jobs.
I wonder if those two wankers give a flying f**k that their actions led to a man being stabbed to death, after all if it wasn’t for what I perceive as a “I can’t be bothered dealing with this clown (Lee) at 2:3am in the morning” kind of attitude, they would have paid more attention to the driver’s license Lee produced to gain entry into Tavares’s room and clearly seen that the picture on Tavares’s Alberta driver’s license didn’t even come close to resembling the man who was passing off Tavares’s driver’s license as his own. Funny that the night auditor and the security guard didn’t pick up on that don’t you think?
I know if I was the Crown Prosecutor in this case I would be wondering what I could charge Walls and Harwood with in relation to the murder.
Think about it for a minute, they went out of their way to let the killer into a hotel guest’s room. At the very least their is a case for negligence causing death right? If Tavares can’t be held criminally responsible for his actions than Harwood and Walls should have been. There has to be something they can be charged with.
Also, I would highly recommend to the Tavares’s family they file a wrongful death suit against Delta and Walls, if they can, and if they haven’t done so already.
Having said as much as I have said about the case in Crooked in Canada today, I invite readers to visit GoPetition and show your support for the Tavares family by signing a petition that is asking for new legislation as it relates to those found not criminally responsible for their actions and the families of their victims.

Just a fact that seems to have been misunderstood. The license that Lee produced to get into the room was not Lee’s, it was Tavares’ license. This guy had the balls to ask to be let into the room (without ID) and when the security opened the door he walked over to Mr. Tavares’ jeans which were placed on a chair, got his wallet, and producet Mr. Tavares’ ID. The security guard was satisfied that the ID said Tavares, but did not even look at the photograph.
Do think an individual with severe mental problems would have the ability to think this through? What if the guard were to have questioned him about the wrong ID? Would there be two innocent victims of this crime?

Thanks for the clarification, but you know what would really make Harwood and Walls look like total imbeciles in Crooked in Canad, is a photograph of both Lee and Tavares so that we can judge for ourselves whether or not there is any resemblance between the cold-blooded murderer and the victim.
Know anybody that is willing to provide those pictures. They can either send them to my email or they can publish them here in the comments section. Just a thought.
And just so you know, I do not believe for one second that security guard didn’t look at the photograph on the driver’s license. He’s full of shit for saying that.
2 Remorse? // Dec 2, 2008 at 6:34 AM
With all this talk about mental problems, and not criminally responsible. Why has this guy shown no remorse for what he has done?

Please keep it up Crooked in Canada. You seem to be the only ones brave enough to ask the questions that close friends and family have been asking for years. I have no clue why Media isn’t all over this… please keep posting, don’t let this go.
- Close friend of Steve’s family.

The only reason I can think of the media not wanting to be all over this story and other similar miscarriages of justices is because the just don’t given a shit. The same can be said about many, but not all Canadians.
People are afraid to rock the boat, are pussies, sissies and lack the backbone to make judges accountable for their decisions.
The media is more worried about what the fallout might be if they rock the boat too much. It’s all about the revenue and ass kissing. They’re puppets of the lawmakers and those who enforce the law.
They make lame excuses, and as far as investigative journalism goes in Canada it is all but dead. They’re chickenshits as far as I’m concerned.

I am sorry for Steve’s family’s loss. Nothing is more difficult than lossing a child.
However, it is not a significant story for the media because it is a run of the mill death/murder. It is just one of hundreds of murders that happen in Alberta each year. Those like the recent murder rape in Edson are more significant to public interest because of their randomness and involved a child.
Wow cj, this story has you by the short and curlies doesn’t it?
If you have been following this story in Crooked in Canada, and I suspect you have been given the amount of comments you have left behind, this isn’t a story about the murder, though the topic can’t be avoided. It’s about JUSTICE and the use of the MENTAL HEALTH DEFENSE as it pertains to serious crimes, and sentencing.
I read the story of the preacher killing that Edson girl, and what he did is further proof that the death penalty should be re-introduced back into Canada.

You are naive if you think this is a serious crime. Unless of course, you consider all of the run of the mill murders that happen every single day in Canada serious.
These murders are only significant to those familiar with the players. To me and everyone else it is just a mention on the news.
Personally, I take more notice of what are still shocking images for me like crimes that involve children and torture.

Nurse Ratched – Wow- murdered in your sleep – stabbed 28 times while you were sleeping because some moron that works at the hotel let this person into your room – WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING! This isn’t serious to you? I think that you have serious issues – make sure you think of this story and what might happen the next time you sleep in a hotel room. It isn’t the murder itself it is the fact that this man is out. He used a ruse to gain access to the room – was granted an NCR defense and is out. He might just be planning his next attack at a hotel you are at with your loved ones – don’t worry I won’t pay attention to you either – it will be just a “mention” in the news. Get your head checked.

I was remising with some old friends earlier in the week – one person brought up Stephan Lee’s name as we went to Junior High and High School (David Thompson and Lord Beaverbrook) with him. This is the first that I had heard that he was involved in an act of murder and I am not surprised one bit. Throughout school Stephan was constantly in trouble for bullying other students and for his general unruly behavior problems. The last time I saw Stephan was in 1996 (Grade 10) just before he was expelled from Lord Beaverbrook High School. I had run-ins with him in the early 90’s at David Thompson Junior High and I’ve watched him lie straight faced to teachers before denying acts of vandalism or bullying. There is definitely something wrong with him, could he be a product of his up bringing or home life? I don’t know.
After reading the details of the case it definitely sounds premeditated. How does one lie his way into someone’s room then stab them to death under reasons of insanity? They don’t!
Based on his past (I’m sure that he has a juvenile history on file) they should have locked him up and thrown away the key. He is definitely not an asset to society.
