What has it been, less than 48 hours since the announcement came that Lt.-Cmdr. William (Bill) Kuebler was booted from Omar Khadr’s legal team? Yeah, it has been at least that.
Today the arrogant, holier-than-thou lawyer is back on the case, because Tuesday a military judge overruled the Pentagon’s firing of Kuebler. The reason, because nobody can fire Kuebler but him.
How effin’ rich is that, and isn’t the rest of Khadr’s legal team going to be happy about that.
They want Kuebler off the case too, and while they might be tempted to come forward and admit as much, they can’t.
It wouldn’t be in the best interests of Omar for them to go public with their concerns about the way his defense is being handled. But they should.
The last thing they want to do is turn their client’s case into a bigger circus than it already is, and then of course there are the repercussions they will have to face for stepping on the lead attorney’s toes.
It wouldn’t be a good career move for them to do something like that. Not that remaining on the case is going do much for their reputations either when it comes to their peers.
Remember, shit runs down hill.
This whole ‘Omar thing’ is a circus now, and if tickets were being sold to see the sideshow the lawyers on both side of courtroom are putting on, I’d definitely considering buying one to take in the show.
I’m going to look at this way; as long as Omar’s lawyers continue playing their silly little games, the longer Omar sits in Guantanamo Bay. The longer he sits in Guantanamo Bay without trial, the safer the rest of the world will be from any terrorist attack he could be contemplating upon his release.
Of course, eventually he is going to go trial, and if he is found guilty, he is going to serve more time.
Kuebler has been on the job for 2 years now and Omar isn’t any closer to freedom now than he was when Kuebler was first assigned to the case.
Of course Kuebler could be playing these games in the hope the Canadian government will finally say enough is enough already, and demand of the U.S. that Omar be returned to Canada. That would be stupid of him to assume that possibility given that the Conservative government has made it clear where they stand on the issue of Omar Khadr.
Having said that, there is no doubt in my mind that Kuebler will be relieved of his duties again and soon.
If he isn’t, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that other members of Omar’s defense team started walking away. Who could blame them for doing that?
Kuebler is, and I have always maintained this, a hindrance to the fair and balanced justice he is supposedly seeking for Omar, and his own personal agenda is getting in the way of providing Omar with a good defense.
Can’t anybody but me see that?
For Kuebler this isn’t what he can do for Omar, it’s what he can do for himself, and his future in the public sector. You can bet after Omar’s trial he is going to leave the military, and hang up his own shingle specializing in defending clients accused of terrorism, or of being a part of terrorism. He’ll cash in big time.
He may be stupid in how he is handling Omar’s case, but he isn’t stupid when it comes to what he knows he can take out of being assigned to this case.
He is working this case for his own personal gain, and he is being obvious about it. Just ask the rest of his defense team.
On his list of priorities, Omar is number tow. The Khadr family and Omar’s supporters need to get their head around that reality.
Everything Kuebler is doing is self-serving, and I doubt very much you would find those lawyers working with him on this case disagreeing with me on that.
Kuebler’s strategy is to do everything in his power to ensure that his client never goes to trial in the U.S. for violating American law.
Kuebler believe it or not, is of the mind that Omar should be tried in Canada for breaking those laws. Now that is just stupid.
Would you want an American who is arrested and accused of murder in Canada being tried in the U.S.? Of course effin’ not.
I tell you what, if Omar’s supporters want to do something for him, maybe they should lobby the Canadian government to demand that Kuebler be removed from the case.
It would definitely be in Omar’s best interest don’t you think?
Hell yeah, I think there are a few elected members of parliament who would jump on that bandwagon.
I’m sure they must be getting a little tired of Kuebler’s BS when it comes to his antics, and his ’looking out’ for the best interests of a Canadian citizen.
You have to think that there are a few Conservative MPs who are thinking that this guy Kuebler is a wanker, and that he is a liability when it comes to Omar’s best interests.
There is no way that there isn’t somebody in the Canadian government who is thinking that Kuebler has proven useless in his defense of Omar.
What I really don’t get in all this is that Kuebler is defending Omar against the very military with whom he serves.
What an obvious conflict of interest that is.
The military has charged Omar, and it is that same military that is defending him. There is something wrong with that picture.
When it comes to Omar’s legal representation, the military shouldn’t have any say when it comes to who should be defending Omar. That part should be left up to Canada.
That said anybody who thinks Lt.-Cmdr. Bill Kuebler is working in the best interest of his client needs to have his or her head examined. One need only review the efforts he has made so far to see that he has gained nothing for Omar except more time behind bars without a trial.
As for the military judge who reinstated Kuebler saying that he is the only one who can remove Kuebler, nah-ah buddy, Omar can fire him, and I think he should. I think it is high time his Canadian lawyers approached him and explained to him what they really think about Kuebler, and what is going on with his defense.
