BOSCO Group Home Doing the Lip Service Dance

Here is a little heads up for any family or youth court judge who thinks sending a troubled, or an ‘in distress’ child to a group home run by BOSCO Homes is a good idea, “Don’t effing do it! It ain’t a good plan your honour. Really it isn’t.”

There is nothing conducive to any child’s’ rehabilitation or treatment when they are sent to BOSCO Homes, where the frontline workers are there because it’s the only the job they can get, need the money, and more importantly are always frustrated with their clients, the kids. Having been a frontline worker myself in Pilot Butte, Saskatchewan (Ranch Ehrlo Society), I think I know what I’m talking about when it comes to group home workers.

And just so you know, the way I just described the staff at BOSCO Homes isn’t limited to just BOSCO Homes. There are other childcare agencies that have the same issues when it comes to the staff they hire, too many to mention here.

Bottom line, for a frontline worker at BOSCO Homes, the idea is to get in and get out.

They are distracted from their duties by constantly thinking about when their shift is going to end, what they are going to do when that shift ends, and what they are going to do with the few days off they have coming up.

There is no way BOSCO Homes is going to be able to change that, but kudos to them for promising to hire more staff, review all files and stop all admissions.

Of course, in my mind that isn’t going to solve the problem.

The new staff they hire, they won’t be any better, or more efficient than the current staff they have in place, if only because the more experience workers in the group home will orientate them.

Reviewing all files, huh, and what for. What is the point of “reviewing the past” when the fixes that need to be implemented are so bloody obvious now, you know security issues and better trained staff.

Just you so you know, you don’t need a university degree to be a good childcare worker, but the idiots who run child welfare programs seem to think a good and capable childcare worker does. It’s total BS.

Have you any idea how many frontline workers in Canadian group homes have some sort of university degree, but no effing talent, natural or otherwise when it comes to working with troubled kids? Way too effing many, that’s how many.

The worst part of it is, organizations all but demand that their frontline staff have degrees, or at least working on one.

A degree is just a piece of paper, and it means shit when it comes to frontline workers, the people who are in the group home day in and day out babysitting, helping the kids acquire life skills, cope with a ton of issues, and toe the line.

A frontline worker doesn’t need a degree to do that. Good life skills, life experience and common sense is all they need.

Psychologists and social workers, huh, they’re a laugh.

You might see them visit a group home a couple, three times a week for any where from a half hour to sometimes a two, maybe three-hour visit.

They’re effing useless.  Always in a hurry to get out of the group home. Trust me, I know what I am talking about. I have been there, done that, and bought the tee shirt.

BOSCO Homes can talk about making changes all it wants, but at the end of the day, it will be the same shit, different pile by the middle of next year.

That’s just how it works for these non-profit charitable organizations for kids.

The more beds they fill, the more taxpayer money they get. The longer a bed stays empty, the less money coming in.

The success of BOSCO Homes, or any other similar childcare organization for that matter, is mostly base on how many beds they can fill.

Treatment, rehab or whatever the child needs in a group home is secondary, and if the beds aren’t being filled, the priority of teenagers like the ones charged with killing that couple after they went AWOL from BOSCO, falls even further down the list.

One other thing, there is a reason BOSCO was run out of Regina, and it has nothing to do with how successful their program is.
