Would He Be Alive If Cop Used Taser Instead, And Should Victim’s Family Cash in on Doug Minty’s Death

June 27th, 2009No Comments

A mentally challenged man in his 50s was shot after getting into a tussle with an attending police officer, and now the community is up in arms.

However, unlike in Montreal when Fredy Villenueva was shot, residents of Elmvale, Ontario haven’t rioted yet.

The shit could still hit the fan there though now that Doug Minty, a man neighbours described as being harmless and helpful, is dead.

But what if he had been shot with a taser gun once, would he still be alive, or, would he still be dead.

I don’t know, but if the taser were used properly, the neighborhood handy man would probably be still alive. That’s what I think.

Anyway, the gun that killed Minty somehow managed to get out of the police officer’s holster, and a lot of questions need to be asked about the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Why, if Minty was so laid back and the kind of guy his neighbors described, was the gun even in play in the first place?

Did Minty reach for it, or, did the cop actually draw his weapon, and Minty went after the gun then?

I’m thinking the tussle was over the gun, but until the full report is written up and doctored to make the shooting death look as accidental as it can be, and then released to the public, we just don’t know the circumstances surrounding this death.

I’m not going to trust what the media has to say just yet, but my money is on that this death will be ruled accidental, and then the mental health advocates will jump all over it, claiming the rights of the mentally challenged aren’t being respected, or something like that anyway.

I’m sorry that Minty is dead, and I hope for is family’s sake that if there is justice due, they get it.

I reckon that the OPP are going to pay the Minty’s off, to make the story go away a lot faster than, this kind of story normally would.

Then again, the Minty’s would be smart to let the criminal courts handle the matter, and then seek damages.

Of course for that too happen, criminal charges have to be laid and I don’t think after all the reports are written up and read, that is going to happen.

The victim’s family might be wise to make a deal now, and put this tragedy behind them so they can grieve for their loss, if of course the OPP is interested in doing the same for themselves by writing the final chapter and having the last say in the matter.

This shooting is just one example of bad things can go really, really go horribly wrong when it comes to policing streets, and looking out for the welfare others while trying to look out for the welfare of one’s own self.

It doesn’t matter if a person is mentally challenged or not when confronting trouble head on, and the police really don’t have much time to make a risk assessment of a particular situation, let alone determine the mental capacity of the person or persons they are confronting.

It’s a no-win situation for police under any circumstances really, and while a win-win situation is a desired outcome, it isn’t always possible and I think this was one of those times.

If it isn’t, then the OPP have a lot to answer for, not to mention the cop whose gun was used to shoot Minty.
