Immigration officials in any Commonwealth country following policy and procedures to the letter, as they should, but there are times I think when they should have a heart when there are mitigating circumstances, and the person applying to stay in a country is not a threat to national security, or criminally engaged in nefarious activities.
Single mother Roseline Ijiola Awolope is one such person.
For whatever reason Canadian immigration officials are showing how cold-hearted they can be, and if things don’t change for the Nairobi born mother of 4 children, she will be forced to pack up her belongings and leave Canada with her children in tow, one of whom just happens to have been born in Canada.
While I’m not fully aware of the reasons Ms. Awolope is being booted out of the country, my gut is telling me that immigration officials are more concerned about following the letter of immigration law, a law those same officials all too often skew the interpretation of to meet their own needs. I’m not saying that immigration officials have tunnel vision when it comes to enforcing immigration laws; I’m just saying that sometimes they can be a little mean spirited and lack compassion and humanity.
Somebody, perhaps many in the immigration department, should explain to Canadians how a Sunday school teacher and a woman spoke highly of in her community doesn’t deserve the opportunity to make a better life for her children in Canada, and be allowed to contributing to society in a positive way, as she has been doing for the past 4 years now.
I think it is cruel of Canada to send a woman back to a country where her daughters are facing genital mutilation, and I think it is pathetic on the part of immigration authorities to allow an Iranian man who has been convicted of a sex crime, and has spent a few years in jail to stay in Canada out of fear for his well-being and yet have no problem deporting a woman back to Nairobi when as far as I know, she hasn’t committed any criminal acts. There is something definitely wrong with that picture, don’t you think?
Having said that, this Thursday is D-Day for Ms. Awolope, and I hope for her sake and that of her children, a judge finds it in his or her heart to allow her to stay in Canada. It’s the right thing to do, unless of course somebody can prove that Ms. Awolope isn’t who she purports to be, and is a threat to national security and the community at large.
We are supposed to be living in “free world“, a world where everybody regardless of race, color, creed or whatever country one comes from, should be given a chance in whatever country they choose to better their life. When it comes to immigration, the only motivation for most immigrants is to make a better life for themselves and their families. As long as they are paying their taxes and contributing to society in a positive way, I see no reason why those kinds of people shouldn’t be given the opportunity to do so. I think Ms. Awolope should be allowed such an opportunity, how about you.

She is from Nigeria.
CG, you may remember I spent 3 years there and my wife is from there as well.
What she claims is absolutely true, if returned, both that her kids will have their faces slashed up (tribal markings are still common in many areas) as well as the genital mutilation and she would likely be killed for speaking out against it.
When you hear about so many BS refugee claimants that are allowed to stay, but cases like this where there are real dangers to her and her children, some bureaucrat clown can decide tough luck for her and the kids is just fucked up.

Hey uplink,
What really pisses me off about this case is that immigration authorities don’t seem to have any problem letting criminally convicted immigrants stay in the country, and yet when it comes to this particular woman (a woman who is just as much at risk being returned to Nigeria as that Iranian I mention in my post being returned to Iran), they have no qualms about deporting her to impending peril. I just don’t get it mate.
